Open Source Idea Generation

January 4th, 2007 by noelperlas

As I was thinking about creating my “design journal”, I came across a big challenge: I will be exposing my ideas to the whole internet. It was more of a fear that even before I could create something tangible out of my own ideas, someone might run away and made something out of it already.

But somewhere along the way I’ve come to accept that it is better to have my ideas journaled than just being kept in a notebook somewhere. Then I thought hey what about: “open source idea generation” where people can contribute to my ideas and create something worthwhile.

Originally, I wanted it to be a tagline to this blog.. but then I realized that there is an organization already doing this. It’s called Creative Commons and its all about sharing creative ideas like it was open-source software. So I licenesed the contents of this site under the “Attribute and Share Alike 2.5” Here is what it means:

Also in the IPR world, there is this concept of “Prior Art”. This is important because people who try to declare IP as their own must prove that there is no “Prior Art”. If you posted your ideas on the web as public domain, under a Creative Commons license or any other such license it makes it obvious that “Prior Art” already exists. So, its still good!

Thanks. :) I didn’t know that. My wife and I were debating whether having this license will stop anyone from copying it anyway. I guess it goes the same for software IP.
