I did some tweaks on the previous sketches I made before. I was trying to make a “bokeh” effect by blurring the circles a bit. But the filter blur in Processing was a bit too strong and I still don’t know how to control it yet, the result was something far from the original one and still way off from what I want.

Sketch 2-1, added some random blur effect.

Sketch 2-2, changed colors a bit, still using the follow mouse effect.

Sketch 2-3, automated the movement and size of the circles still with the blur filter.

I find myself going back to learning Processing when I feel the need for fresh air or escape. Someone told me that I was too technical to be creative. Working with highly technical people, this was something new to me. I always am thought of as creative than technical. I guess I am absorbing some new skills by working closely with technical people. But I digress.

So I open up processing to see how technical I am or maybe exercise and learn to be more technical and creative at the same time. And upon booting up, I found an old sketch that I did, I guess at another point when I felt the need to escape or was feeling frustrated. The short sketch involved dots with random sizes and hue. As I move the mouse around, the dots “paint on the canvas.” Look:

But I think the code itself is nice on its own. I’ll publish the actual java applet later. But as you can see, with only little setting variations can generate different results. I can’t wait to get a grasp on this language.

I love that it looks almost like watercolor. (Did some post processing on the image seen here to bump up the contrast):

Here is the actual applet:

(I removed this applet as it was causing the site to slow down. Watch out for a new section which will contain links to my sketches soon.)

I have been playing around with Processing since 2002 when it was still in alpha. I even had a couple of workshops trying to learn it, one held by the master himself, Casey Reas. But I can’t seem to wrap my head around in its programming language. Maybe because my intentions were too ambitious?

So I go back to the drawing board every once in a while, with honest intentions of learning it again. This morning was one of those days. I went back and launched the Processing environment and rummaged through my old sketches. I found this one, which I will call my “first sketch”. Although it is not really my first.. but it is my first since I started this blog and since I started counting. So here is a screen capture of it:

Both these sketches are based on this formula, which I got from fellow ivrean David Lu (unfortunately his site has been offline for a while now), which he got from somewhere else (I forget where):

x = x * cos(n) + c
y = y * sin(n) + c
n += c
c += 0.001

So there.. sketch #001. Will upload the full sketch when I manage to figure out how to do that in wordpress.
