On our recent trip to Singapore. I managed to find Michael Bierut’s (of Pentagram) book “Seventy-nine Short Essays on Design.” This was one of the books in my Amazon wish list and I’m sure glad I got it. I’m just on essay 6 but still thats an achievement for me. hehe. It is an easy read and very interesting for people who work in the industry of graphic design. There are essays on David Carson, Graphic Design history, etc. Plus I like how Mr. Bierut writes, his tone jumps out of the book since he writes with so much passion and conviction. He sounds witty as well. This makes me think of writing longer posts… well maybe.

But what you can’t see in the photo above is how beautiful this book feels in your hands. The cover isn’t the usual plastic laminated one, but rather a nice hard paper feel. Each essay is rendered with a different font, which I would normally object to, but in this instance it was very well made and well purposed. Here’s a post on his blog, which most if not all of the essays came from. Go out and buy one!

First in my agenda before I get started on the actual creation of sketches is to at least make this blog better looking. Opting for small steps, I first chose the font: Lucida Grande. I first bumped into this font used as a web typeface when I was studying CSS. It seems like the go to font of web standards geeks. I personally find it neat and very legible. But this font is for macs only… I’ll probably think of the rest of the world later. I also did some initial layout fixes by putting the content on the left and the sidebar to the right.

This site still needs a lot of work but I have to remember that this is an ongoing process. And I have to let go of the notion to work on stuff until its complete before showing it to the public. This is the first step of challenging myself and the process that I’ve gotten used to. On the other hand, who is reading this post anyway?
